Delos was the most important Panhellenic sanctuary and according to mythology, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The island was under either Greek and Roman domination over the centuries. Although its a relatively flat and ugly island, it often was populated by a set of wealthy entrepreneurs because of the absence of taxes. Delos was at its peak of importance between 540 BC and 200 AD.
