Ephesus is in the Republic of Turkey about 700 km south of Istanbul and 10 km inland from the Aegean cost. At the whim of various rulers, the city was moved several times over the centuries. This area is enormous as ruins go, much larger than the Parthenon in Greece and about the size of Pompeii in Italy. The city was built mostly by the Romans but the Greeks had their impact also. We saw the Caves of the Seven Sleepers, the Temple of Artemis, the Odeon (a smaller theater for about 1500 people), the Varius Baths, Houses of the Slope, Temple of Hadrian, Fountain of Trajan and Pollio. Of course, all this could not have been built without a great deal of taxation, for which the Romans were often not very popular.
The Roman Latrines are interesting in that is ornate and there are many holes in the marble all in a row. It appears to have been a meeting spot. 10
