Rhodes or "Rodos" in Greek, means "rose". While Rhodes has a long history in Greek mythology, the more interesting item about Rhodes is the establishment of the Knights of the Order of St. John in 1309 AD. They are the reason the city is surrounded by a fortified wall which is unlike anything to be found in other Grecian Island cities.
